Driver Education Learning Experiences in the Classroom
30 hours of classroom instruction are required by the Department of Transportation. There are 15 2-hour classroom sessions. During this time, the student driver will complete the 18 chapter textbook Drive Right, the Wisconsin Motorist's Handbook and will be given a practice "temps test" daily of either road sign identification or multiple choice knowledge questions. Three guest speakers will share their "on the road" experiences and knowledge with the student driver:
- A sheriff with the Union Pacific Railroad
- A professional semi truck driver
- A police officer from the Mukwonago Police Department
Do you know there is at least one train/vehicle/pedestrian collision a month in southeastern Wisconsin? Do you know railroad crossings are considered an intersection? Do you know the speed a train is moving is deceiving because the shape of the train does not change as it approaches a crossing? Are you aware of how much a trucker can see from their rig, and more importantly, how much they can't see? How has the driving task evolved into multi-tasking when you are driving? Do you know why truckers need to have all drivers stop prior to the stop line? What is the process an officer will follow when suspicious of a driver under the influence? Who is allowed to ride in the back of a pickup truck? What light colors are allowed on a vehicle?
Learn the answers to these questions, and much more, with your classroom instructor.

Behind the Wheel Driving Experiences
Your Door To Door Driving Instructor will pick up your son/daughter at your home for each drive! At the end of each drive session a study sheet will be given so you will know what was taught. Use these study sheets as instructions for practice driving with your student. Using one set of instructions will simplify your students learning.
There are 6 2-hour shared drive sessions for the student driver. Drive partner/s can be chosen or matched up with thought put into compatibility. The first driver will be picked up and begins the drive lesson en route to the home of their driving partner. Each student receives one hour of driving time and one hour of meaningful observation time. The observing student is given a white board, marker and task sheet that requires observation of pavement markings, other drivers, the impact of weather and many other related pieces to that day's lesson. This is not free time to nap or daydream!
Drive Session One:
Driving on rural roads, learning about characteristics of these roadways, experiencing how to properly drive on hills, curves, approach an intersection, drive through an intersection, make right turns and left turns driving basics! The second piece of this session is guided practice of uphill and downhill parking with curbs and without curbs and learning the characteristics of residential roadways. "Practice driving" with dad or mom should now be including these drive skills.
Drive Session Two:
The Y turn and parallel parking begin this lesson. Both are surprisingly simple the cues the student will learn may help mom and dad brush up on "the dreaded parallel parking!" No need to be afraid of this drive session! The second piece of this drive session is spent on business district roadways: "downtown" and parking lots of several large businesses. Business district roadways are the most challenging to drive because there is so much happening in a small area. The final piece of this session is on the expressway, driving south where there is often less traffic. Merging, exiting, lane changes and understanding the characteristics of expressways are taught learn why these roadways are the simplest to drive on! "Practice driving" can now include the Y turn and parallel parking.
Drive Session Three:
More expressway driving, this time driving north to interact with a higher volume of traffic and drive in more complex intersections. Four additional turnabouts are taught.
Drive Session Four:
Downtown Waukesha is our destination today. This drive presents a more complicated downtown experience and an opportunity to drive on numerous one-way streets. Angle and perpendicular parking are taught and should also be added to the list of drive skills to practice with dad and mom.
Drive Session Five:
Yet another expressway driving experience, taking I-43 north to Highway 100 and Grange in Hales Corners to drive on the roundabout and to learn why this type of intersection is re-appearing in this area.
Drive Session Six:
A practice road test is administered today in a manner that is as similar as possible to what the student driver will experience with the DMV road examiner. The score sheet by the DMV is used and the test will start and finish within 15 to 20 minutes. The remaining drive time is used to polish drive skills that were less than perfect on today's practice road test.
