Defensive Driving for Teens |
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teens (ages 16-19) are four times more likely to be involved in a car crash than adults. "Accidents don't just happen to kids who drive too fast, drink and drive, or otherwise take foolish risks," emphasizes Jay Iding, a sergeant with the Village of Pewaukee Police Department and instructor for the class. "Every teen is at greater risk," he says, "because newly licensed drivers simply don't have the maturity, hands-on training and experience needed in emergency situations."
You may be wondering WHY? are you receiving a flyer about a DEFENSIVE DRIVING CLASS from the driver ed teacher ~ isn't that what Door To Door Driving School should be teaching? What is taught during this daylong classroom and driving experience are defensive driving skills that driver ed programs cannot do out on the roadways because of traffic, pedestrians, trees, ditches, and buildings. This is a gift I gave my daughter on a snowy Saturday in January. When she came home she told me how scared she was doing emergency stops at 40, 50 and then 60 mph. This is scary, whether in a parking lot or on the road. This was a really good opportunity to experience Wisconsin weather, the effect on driving and how to handle this correctly. There are three students per squad car, equipped with a walkie-talkie; the police officer is out on the course with a walkie-talkie to give directives. Students spend about 6 hours in the squad car. This is preceded by two hours of instruction in the classroom. A student should pack a lunch and bring their temps or drivers license. If you are interested in this class, call quickly - the dates fill up fast! I called my insurance company, asking if there was a discount on the premium at the completion of this class - the answer was no, a discount was only given to drivers over the age of 55. Maybe your insurance company will have a different answer! ![]() ( For More Information Visit: http://www.waukeshamemorial.org/EventsClasses.asp?PageID=EVC000010 Defensive Driving for Teens is a one-day, eight-hour course that recognizes and addresses the lack of hands-on-training and experience that newly licensed drivers have in emergency driving situations. The course is taught by police officers on the WCTC training course. Class participants will receive behind the wheel training using actual police cars. Training exercises will include the basic concepts of: vehicle dynamics, evasive maneuvers, skid control, braking, and steering. This program has been coordinated with WCTC for many years and completion has been shown to make a difference in the driving records of teens. Call Jody at WCTC, 262-691-5070 or email Jody at jwillson@wctc.edu Participants must bring their temporary driver's permit or driver's license.
